The free tier that pulled ahead of Yoast

Most SEO plugins give away a taste and gate the rest. Rank Math gives away the part that actually costs its rival money. On the free plan you can optimise a post for five focus keywords; Yoast's free plugin still limits you to one, and has for years. That single difference is why a lot of bloggers switched, and the install count reflects it: Rank Math now sits above 4 million active WordPress installations, checked on the WordPress.org plugin directory on 22 September 2026.

The free tier is not a stub. It ships 30-plus on-page SEO tests, a schema generator with 18 pre-defined types, XML sitemaps, redirect management, Google Search Console integration and basic analytics, across unlimited personal sites at no cost. For a one-person site that is close to everything you need, and it is the reason the paid plans have to justify themselves on tracking and scale rather than on switching on basic SEO.

Pricing: three tiers that scale by sites, not features

Rank Math's paid plans are priced in euros, and the figures below are what the pricing page returned on 22 September 2026. The monthly rate is the billed-annually rate; each plan renews higher after the first year, so budget for the renewal, not the sticker.

Read the "sites" column before the price. PRO's "unlimited" covers your own sites only, and it excludes client sites outright. So the moment you manage a single site for someone else and want Rank Math's licence to cover it, you are not paying €7.99, you are on Business at €24.99 a month, whether or not you need the 10,000-keyword tracker or the white-label reports that come with it. That jump is the real cost of the plugin for freelancers, and the marketing does not lead with it.

The AI add-on is a separate bill

This is the part reviews gloss over. Rank Math AI, the content-generation tool, is not part of the SEO plugin you are buying. It is a separate product billed on usage credits, and the Pro, Business and Agency plans only bundle a free trial of it: a Starter trial on PRO, a Creator trial on Business, an Expert-level trial on Agency. Once the trial ends, generating content costs credits on top of your SEO subscription.

That matters if you are choosing between Rank Math and Yoast on AI features. Yoast folds its AI writing assistance into Yoast Premium as a core part of the product, one price. Rank Math keeps the SEO plugin lean and meters the AI separately. Neither is wrong, but do not buy a Rank Math paid plan expecting unlimited AI drafts to be included, because they are not.

Setup and performance

Activation drops you into a setup wizard that asks one useful question up front: Easy or Advanced. Easy walks a first-time site owner through the essentials without drowning them in modules; Advanced exposes the full switchboard for people who know what a schema type or a redirect rule is. It is a small touch that spares beginners the wall of settings that makes Yoast feel heavier on day one.

On weight, independent testing from WP Rocket found Rank Math lighter and faster than Yoast SEO even with the premium add-ons of both plugins active, not just in a bare install. If you have been holding off because SEO plugins have a reputation for bloating admin pages, that gap is worth knowing. Requirements are modest: WordPress 6.7 or newer, PHP 7.4 or newer, and it is tested up to WordPress 7.1.2 as of its last update.

Rank Math holds a 4.8 out of 5 rating from 7,506 reviews on WordPress.org. The distribution is telling: 7,070 five-star and 144 four-star against 196 one-star, with a thin middle of 53 three-star and 43 two-star. That U-shape, a large happy majority and a small hard-unhappy tail, is typical of a plugin that either fits your workflow cleanly or clashes with an existing setup during migration. It is a strong score, not a perfect one, and the one-star cluster is worth reading before you migrate a live site.

Verdict: who should install it, who should not

Install the free plan if you run one or a handful of your own sites. Five focus keywords, schema and Search Console data for nothing genuinely beats Yoast's free tier, and most solo bloggers never need to pay. Step up to PRO at €7.99 a month only when you actually want the 500-keyword rank tracker on your own sites; the feature you are buying there is tracking, not SEO.

Skip it, or at least look harder, in two cases. If you manage client sites, Rank Math forces you onto Business at €24.99 a month regardless of how few keywords you track, so a freelancer with three client sites and modest needs may find Yoast Premium's per-site pricing cheaper. And if AI content generation is the reason you are shopping, Yoast Premium bundles its AI writing into one price while Rank Math meters its AI separately on credits; price the credits before you assume Rank Math is the cheaper route. For everyone else running WordPress, the free tier alone makes it the first plugin to install.
