PopVid AI review: AI video roleplay and live calls in the browser. What 200 free credits buy, why prices only show after login, refunds, 18+ rules and alternatives.

Most AI video tools hand you a clip and stop. PopVid AI keeps going. You pick a story someone in its community built, type what your character says or does, and the other character answers with a freshly generated video. Then you reply again. The site calls this "Real-Time AI Roleplay in Video", and it runs entirely in the browser at popvid.ai.
The catalogue leans hard into genre fiction: anime, romance, fantasy, sci-fi, yandere, mafia, idol and paranormal. If you came for a general text-to-video generator for ads or B-roll, this is the wrong shop, and the rest of this review explains why. If interactive anime fiction is the draw, the free credits are enough to find out whether it clicks.
Everything below was checked on popvid.ai, its FAQ, support page, Terms and refund policy on October 5, 2026. Prices are the one thing we could not check, for a reason covered in the pricing section.
Sign-up takes Google, Apple, Facebook or an emailed sign-in link. New accounts get 200 credits as a welcome gift, and each roleplay turn costs 2 credits. Spend nothing else and that is about 100 turns: one long evening with a single story, or a quick tour of five or six.
That is the whole free allowance. PopVid's own FAQ is blunt: "Free users don't receive daily refreshed Credits." Several reviews written earlier in 2026 say free accounts get a daily top-up. The current FAQ and support page both contradict them, and the site is the one to believe. Once the 200 are gone you buy more, invite friends (100 credits per eligible new user) or post enough to qualify for the Creator Program, which pays up to 10,000 credits a month.
Two things soften this. The first video call each day is free, and a call runs up to 10 minutes. And credits are only taken when a generation succeeds, so a failed render because of a system or model error costs nothing. What the free tier does not mention up front is the watermark. Watermark-free download is listed as a paid perk, which means free downloads carry one, though the site never says so in as many words. The FAQ also prices a roleplay turn but not an image, a 5-second clip or a minute of a paid call. You learn those costs by spending.
PopVid has no pricing page. The paid Premium Pass and the separate credit packs load their prices from your user profile, so a logged-out visitor sees none of them. As of October 5, 2026 we found no public dollar figure anywhere on the site, and we are not going to guess one.
The checkout screen does reveal the shape of the deal. The pass is sold for a set number of days or a full year, shown as a price per day, flagged as a "launch special price" and described as a "one-time purchase" that "does not auto-renew". Payment goes through Stripe. Holding a pass gets you:
Credit packs, which PopVid calls Extra Credits, are one-time top-ups that never expire. If you play in bursts rather than every night, they are the better fit. Recurring subscriptions are not offered yet; the FAQ says they are coming "soon". Older reviews quoting $4.99, $14.99 and $44.99 monthly plans describe the site when it was still Meme-Gen.ai. Those plans are gone.
Refunds are not on offer. The refund policy calls all subscriptions non-refundable and still names Meme-Gen.ai, so it was written for a product that sold renewals, not passes. Read it as "assume the money is spent" and buy the shortest pass first.
Twists are the meme side of the site, and where the Meme-Gen heritage shows. Take a meme, an image or another user's video, add your own turn with a text prompt or a one-click template, and post it. Others can twist your twist, so a popular clip grows a chain of variations.
Text-to-video and image-to-video make 5-second clips. Uploaded videos should be under 10 seconds, and anything past 60 seconds cannot be extended further. The consumer app publishes no output resolution beyond "Higher Resolution" as a paid option. That makes it hard to compare with Runway or Pika, which put resolution on the plan page.
Image generation works from a plain prompt and feeds everything else. Generate a character, animate it, then give it a plot in the story builder.
Video calls are the showpiece. PopVid's in-house R3 model renders a character who talks back on a live call for up to 10 minutes. The developer API built on the same idea outputs 576x768 portrait video and caps sessions at 5 minutes, which hints at what you are watching in the app, though the consumer side does not confirm it.
Every model is PopVid's own: the R3 call model, a newer roleplay model promising "synced voice and lip movement", and what the About page calls a "proprietary World Model". No third-party model is named anywhere, so there is no way to tell when the engine underneath changes.
PopVid is for adults only. The Terms say you must be over 18, and the Community Guidelines repeat it. The content rules split on visibility. Public posts may not contain explicit sexual content or nudity aimed at sexual purposes, while private chats sit largely outside that section. Some rules apply everywhere, public or private: no deepfakes, nothing involving underage or underage-looking people, no non-consent content. Breaking them means removed content, a suspension or a permanent ban.
Uploading a photo of a real person means certifying that you own the complete intellectual property rights to that image. Few image-to-video tools ask for that promise, and it puts the liability squarely on you.
On output rights the Terms say nothing. We found no clause on who owns what you generate or whether you may use it commercially. For a meme, that hardly matters. For anything you plan to sell or run as an ad, it is a reason to pick a tool whose terms answer the question. Deleting your account erases all posts, credits and history, so download what you want to keep first.
The Terms, effective June 26, 2025, name the operator as "Reverie AI" at "1 Cupertino, CA 95014". The refund page spells it "Revere.AI". The About page describes "a collective of AI researchers, animation veterans, and gaming enthusiasts" and names nobody. meme-gen.ai still redirects to popvid.ai. Kavel's review in August 2026 called the platform seven months old and noted it had no Trustpilot profile. None of this is damning alone. Together it describes a young company that has not finished tidying up after a rebrand, selling without refunds.
One practical warning: there is no official PopVid mobile app. "PopVid - AI Video Photo Editor" on the App Store came from an unrelated developer (its US page now returns 404), and "Popvid: Ai VidGen App Help" on Google Play is a third-party guide. The real product lives at popvid.ai, in a browser.
Try it if you want interactive anime, romance or fantasy stories where the characters answer on video, or you enjoy remixing memes. The 200 free credits, roughly 100 roleplay turns plus a free call every day, are enough to decide without paying. Because the pass is one-time and does not auto-renew, a short pass is a contained risk.
Skip it if you need to see a price before signing up, expect a refund when something disappoints, or want clear rights to use what you make commercially. For general AI video, Runway and Pika publish their plans and resolutions. For meme editing, CapCut does more without credits. And if the appeal is character roleplay with video as a bonus, Character.AI handles text roleplay without charging 2 credits a turn.
