Smartlead review: real prices from $39/month, the 90,000-send Pro cap, add-on costs, refund contradictions and when Instantly or Lemlist fits better.
Smartlead's pitch fits in one line of its pricing FAQ: "All Smartlead plans include unlimited email accounts at no extra cost." Connect five Google Workspace inboxes or five hundred, warm every one of them up, and the bill does not move. For a cold-email team that spreads volume over dozens of domains to stay out of spam folders, that is the whole reason to look at it.
What the line leaves out is that the plans are metered on something else. Every tier caps contacts and monthly sends, and in the January 2026 repricing ("Go Unlimited With New Smartlead Pricing Plans", dated 15 January in Smartlead's changelog) the cap on the $94 Pro plan fell from 150,000 emails a month to 90,000. Same price, 40% fewer sends. It also leaves out everything that is not a mailbox. Dedicated IPs, inbox-placement testing, client workspaces and mailboxes bought through Smartlead are all separate line items.
Smartlead is run by 521 Products Pty Ltd out of Sydney. The 14-day trial needs no card and gives you 2,500 sends, 1,250 contacts, unlimited mailbox connections and every paid feature except white-labelling. That is enough to warm a set of inboxes and run one real campaign before paying anything.
These figures were checked on smartlead.ai/pricing on 31 October 2026. The page carries no update date, and the banner offering 50% off the first month on any plan is a promotion that may not last.
| Plan | Monthly | Billed annually | Contacts | Sends / month | Verified emails |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Base | $39 | $32/mo | 2,000 | 6,000 | $59/mo add-on |
| Pro | $94 | $78/mo | 30,000 | 90,000 | $59/mo add-on |
| Unlimited Smart | $174 | $144/mo | Unlimited | 150,000 | 50,000/mo included |
| Unlimited Prime | $379 | $315/mo | Unlimited | 500,000 | 170,000/mo included |
| Enterprise | Custom | Custom | Unlimited | Custom | Custom |
Warmup emails do not count against the send cap, and sends renew on your billing date. Contacts do not reset monthly, so Base's 2,000 fill up and stay full until you delete leads.
The gating is where Base stops being a real option. Smartlead's own help article says its "pricing is built around outbound scale, not feature gating", yet Base has no API, no webhooks, no CRM and no client workspaces. If your leads arrive from Clay or leave for HubSpot through Zapier, the real entry price is $94 a month, or $78 billed annually. Pro also runs out sooner than it used to: a team sending 120,000 emails a month fitted inside the $94 plan in July 2025 and now needs Unlimited Smart at $174.
Smartlead's own help-centre screenshot of the plan picker still shows Unlimited Prime at $390. The live pricing page said $379 on 31 October 2026, so check the figure at checkout.
Plans send from shared, rotating IPs. A dedicated IP is a SmartServer at $39 per server per month, sold as an add-on on Pro and Unlimited Smart and bundled (three of them) only with Unlimited Prime. Inbox-placement testing is a separate product too: SmartDelivery runs from $49 a month for 120 sequence tests of up to 50 sender accounts each, to $599 for the Expert tier.
No sending infrastructure of your own? SmartSenders sells it. Fresh Google or Outlook mailboxes through Zapmail cost $4.50 per mailbox per month plus $13 per domain per year, and pre-warmed ones $9 a month plus $18 a domain. Twenty fresh Google mailboxes on ten domains add $90 a month and $130 a year on top of the plan. Those mailboxes are cancelled along with your plan, so leaving Smartlead means leaving the inboxes as well.
Stack the usual pieces and Pro stops being a $94 tool. Pro with one SmartServer and SmartDelivery Growth is $182 a month before a single mailbox. Calling through SmartDialer (launched February 2026) and email verification credits are billed separately again, and Smartlead's own pages disagree on verification: one says from $32, another $15 a month for 6,000 credits. Trust the checkout screen, not either page.
The core engine is good at the job it exists for. A campaign rotates automatically across every mailbox attached to it, so thirty inboxes each sending a few dozen emails a day look like thirty quiet senders rather than one loud one. Warmup runs on every tier with no cap, but the pool your mailboxes warm up in depends on the plan. Base gets the Foundation tier and Pro the Growth tier; only the Unlimited plans reach Premium and the Ultra Premium pools added in January 2026. Admission is scored out of 100 on account age and SPF, DKIM and DMARC hygiene among other signals, so a fresh domain with sloppy DNS stays out.
"Unlimited" warmup has a fair-use clause. The policy, updated 1 February 2026, prohibits "abusing the unlimited email warm-up offered by us" and reserves the right to "apply usage control limits to certain features". It names no number. The limit is whatever Smartlead decides once it notices you.
Warmup is no guarantee, either. A Trustpilot reviewer in September 2026 reported domains landing "on the SURBL.org blacklist" while on the platform. A shared pool is only as clean as its worst member, which is the case for paying for a SmartServer or a higher pool tier if your domains matter to you.
Agencies are the customer Smartlead is really built for. From Pro upward you can add client workspaces with their own permissions, their own email and lead credits and one API key each, then white-label the lot with your domain, your logo and your own billing cycle so clients never see the Smartlead name. Each workspace is $29 a month.
Five clients on Pro cost $94 plus 5 × $29, or $239 a month before mailboxes or IPs. Unlimited Prime includes three workspaces, so five clients there come to $437. From the fourth client on Pro, the workspace fees cost more than the plan itself.
Replies from every connected mailbox land in one Master Inbox, where an "Assign to" option hands a thread to a teammate. With hundreds of inboxes in play, that unibox is what makes the setup workable at all. The SmartAssistant chat helper is included free on every plan, trial included.
On Pro and above the API is broad. There is a REST API at server.smartlead.ai that takes up to 400 leads per upload, a full CSV export of a campaign's leads with engagement metrics, an MCP server exposing 116+ tools, and since March 2026 a command-line client. The documented rate limit is 10 requests every 2 seconds, though the same page says limits vary by plan. Base users get the dashboard export (Campaign > Lead list > Download as CSV) and nothing programmatic.
Export before you cancel, and do not rely on either deadline. The help centre gives your data "a cozy two-week stay" after cancellation, followed by a deletion support cannot reverse; the terms, updated 19 May 2026, say one month. Plan around two weeks. Base and Pro cancel from Settings > Subscription > Cancel and stay active to the end of the billing cycle. Custom plans, and plans downgraded from one, have to cancel through support.
Smartlead's refund rules contradict each other. The terms say fees "are non-refundable" if you cancel mid-period. The help centre, updated 30 October 2026, promises new customers a 7-day refund guarantee and allows a 3-day window after a renewal, but only if you did not use the product in those three days and give a "valid reason". "Not getting desired results" is listed as a reason that does not qualify. Upgrade payments and add-ons are never refunded. If you are counting on the 7-day promise, screenshot the help page and make the request in writing.
Trustpilot had Smartlead at 2.8 from 139 reviews when checked on 31 October 2026. Trustpilot skews angry, but these complaints repeat. On support, a September reviewer wrote "Good luck getting a response same day, even through chat" and an October one called it "terribly slow". On billing, an August review says it "makes it almost impossible to cancel, you can ONLY pause", which clashes with the documented cancel button. On stability, "super buggy" in September and a redesigned interface called "of no use and frustrating" in October. Customer-success calls start only at Unlimited Smart and a private Slack channel only at Unlimited Prime, so Base and Pro customers are the ones waiting in the chat queue.
Buy Smartlead if you are an agency or a high-volume sender who already owns, or plans to buy, dozens of mailboxes and needs white-label client workspaces. Rotation, uncapped warmup and per-client credits do that job well, and Unlimited Smart at $174 for 150,000 sends and unlimited contacts is fair value at that scale.
Skip it if you send under 6,000 emails a month but need Zapier or CRM sync. Base cannot do it, and Woodpecker or Saleshandy cost less at small volumes. Skip it if LinkedIn steps belong in the same sequence, because Lemlist builds them in rather than bolting them on through an Aimfox integration. If you want the same unlimited-mailbox model and are choosing on price, read our Instantly review first: Instantly has add-on bills and a no-refund contract of its own, so compare at your real monthly send volume rather than the headline price. And if same-day support matters more than the cost per mailbox, Smartlead's own reviewers are telling you to look elsewhere.
