HostGator review: Hatchling now allows 10 sites, but $3.75/mo needs a 3-year prepay and renews at $10.99. Inode limits, courtesy backups, chat-only support.
Most HostGator reviews still describe Hatchling, the cheapest shared plan, as a single-website account. That stopped being true. On hostgator.com/web-hosting, checked on 2026-10-02, Hatchling lists 10 websites and 10 GB of SSD storage, and the ladder above it scales the same way: Baby gets 20 sites and 20 GB, Business 50 and 50 GB, Pro 100 and 100 GB. For anyone parking a handful of small sites - a portfolio, a club page, two side projects - that changes the maths more than any feature on the page.
The rest of the offer is familiar. Every shared plan carries "unmetered" bandwidth, a free domain for the first year, auto-renewing Let's Encrypt SSL, cPanel inside HostGator's customer portal and what the company calls "courtesy website backups". Migration is available as a paid extra, with no price published. HostGator is a Newfold Digital brand, so it shares a parent with Bluehost. Comparing the two is comparing two storefronts of one company.
HostGator's own pricing page fills in its numbers in the browser; the page itself holds only "$X.XX/mo" placeholders. The figures below therefore come from a third-party tracker (checkthat.ai, updated April 10, 2026) and match other 2026 reviews. They were the going rates as of October 2026. We could not find a price for the Pro plan anywhere, so it is left blank rather than guessed.
| Plan | Sites / SSD | Intro (36-month prepay) | Renewal, 36 months | Renewal, 12 months | Month to month |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hatchling | 10 / 10 GB | $3.75/mo | $10.99/mo | $13.19/mo | $17.59/mo |
| Baby | 20 / 20 GB | $4.50/mo | $16.49/mo | $18.69/mo | $18.99/mo |
| Business | 50 / 50 GB | $6.25/mo | $21.99/mo | $24.19/mo | $26.29/mo |
| Pro | 100 / 100 GB | not listed | not listed | not listed | not listed |
The headline price needs a 36-month prepay: $135 up front for Hatchling. HostGator's terms say promotional rates "will automatically renew after initial term at regular rate", and on Hatchling that is $10.99/mo for another three years, or $395.64 for months 37 to 72. That is 2.9 times the first bill. Business goes from $225 to $791.64 over the same stretch.
Two smaller items arrive sooner. The free domain renews at $23.99 a year for a .com from year two, per HostGator's own TLD price list, so Hatchling's real three-year cost is about $183, not $135. Professional Email, if you tick it, "will automatically renew at the regular rate of $2.99/mo." The other checkout add-ons are CodeGuard backups from $1.99/mo and SiteLock Essentials at $5.99/mo.
Bandwidth is unmetered. Files and databases are not. HostGator's Terms of Service (last modified June 10, 2026) say accounts with an inode count "in excess of 200,000" can have "an adverse effect on server performance", and they draw the same line at 5,000 database tables, 10 GB of total database usage or 5 GB in a single database. An inode is one file or folder. Ten WordPress sites with a few years of plugin updates, cache files and image thumbnails can pass 200,000 of them long before they fill 10 GB of disk, so the storage figure is the number on the sales page and the inode count is the one you will actually get a warning about.
Backups are the bigger gap. "Courtesy" is the operative word: HostGator says it "automatically works in the background to provide frequent website backups as a courtesy to our customers", which describes a habit, not a retention period or a restore time. The ToS then adds that "any shared account using more than 20 GB of disk space will be removed from our off-site backup", databases excepted. Baby, Business and Pro all sell more disk than that. On those plans the advertised storage and the backed-up storage are two different numbers.
If the sites matter, pay for CodeGuard or run your own off-site backup plugin from day one.
Most HostGator servers "reside in Provo, Utah, and Atlanta, Georgia", according to its data-centre help article. Shared hosting has no region picker. A site whose readers are in Europe or Asia pays an ocean crossing on every uncached request, and a free Cloudflare layer in front hides that for static pages but not for logged-in or checkout traffic.
The stack is conventional: Apache 2.4.63, PHP 8.2.27 by default on AlmaLinux 9.5, MySQL 8.0.41 and SSD storage on shared plans, with NVMe kept for VPS and dedicated servers. There is no LiteSpeed, which is what Hostinger and A2 Hosting put under WordPress so that server-level page caching works without a plugin. We ran no speed tests of our own, so there are no TTFB figures here. One small tell: HostGator's server-specs help page still lists CentOS 6.8, an operating system that reached end of life in 2020. The documentation trails the platform.
Hatchling's plan card says "Chat Only". Phone support starts at Baby. That lands hardest on the buyer the cheapest plan is built for: someone who is not going to fix a broken DNS record alone at 11pm.
On Trustpilot HostGator holds a 4.6 TrustScore from 17,873 reviews (seen on 2026-10-02), 79% of them five-star and 13% one-star. The one-star reviews repeat themselves. Chat takes a long time to get anywhere - "29 minutes in. He's just asked me for my email address," one customer wrote on October 1, 2026 - and email-delivery faults stay open: "In two weeks Hostgator has still not fixed my email delivery," from September 28. HostGator does reply to negative reviews in public, which not every host bothers with.
HostGator now sells NVMe VPS plans priced far below its old line: NVMe 2 at $2.09/mo, NVMe 4 at $4.18, NVMe 8 at $8.36 and NVMe 16 at $17.67, each on a 24-month term and renewing at about 2.2 times that ($4.68, $9.35, $18.70 and $39.53). They are self-managed, and cPanel is "not included with self-managed plans and must be installed separately". A cPanel licence costs several times the entry VPS on its own. Treat these as raw Linux servers to compare with a Vultr or DigitalOcean instance, not as the next step up for a cPanel user.
Shared, VPS, dedicated and reseller hosting fees are refundable within the first 30 days. Domains, install fees and add-ons such as SiteLock are not, and cancelling hosting inside the first year triggers "a non-refundable $17.99 USD domain fee" for the free domain. So the real refund on a cancelled Hatchling signup is $135 minus $17.99, minus anything added at checkout.
Buy Hatchling if you have several small, low-traffic sites with a mostly US audience, you are happy to prepay three years, and you put the renewal date in your calendar today. About $183 for three years including the domain, for ten sites on one cPanel account, is hard to undercut. Leaving before month 37 is an ordinary migration, not a penalty.
Skip it if the site earns money and needs backups you can count on, because courtesy backups with a 20 GB off-site ceiling are not a backup plan. Skip it too if you want phone help on the cheapest tier, or if most of your visitors are outside North America. SiteGround costs more but includes daily backups and data centres in Europe and Asia. Hostinger gives you LiteSpeed and a choice of region at a similar intro price. DreamHost suits anyone who would rather not lock in three years up front. And if the shortlist is HostGator against Bluehost, both belong to Newfold, so decide on plan limits and renewal price rather than on the company behind them.
