The four kinds of platform

"Best payment platform" is a question with no single answer, because the nine tools on this list are not competing for the same job. Lump them together and you will pick the wrong one. Split them into four kinds and the choice gets easy.

• Payment processors take card payments on your site. Stripe, Whop and PayPal Business live here. You handle your own tax.
• Merchant of record platforms become the legal seller, so they collect and remit sales tax and VAT for you. Paddle and Lemon Squeezy do this, and charge more for it.
• Global business accounts hold multiple currencies, pay suppliers abroad and issue cards. Airwallex is the fullest example.
• Money movement and multi-currency accounts are about getting paid and sending funds cheaply across borders. Wise, Payoneer and Revolut sit here.

Stripe: best for online businesses and developers

Stripe is the default for a reason. It charges 2.9% + 30¢ per US card charge, the number the whole industry benchmarks against, with 1% added for internationally issued cards and another 1% when a payment is converted into your settlement currency. The API is the best in the category, the docs are excellent, and almost every tool you might bolt on already integrates with it.

The trade-off is that Stripe is a processor, not a shield. It calculates tax through Stripe Tax as a paid add-on, but you still register and file in each jurisdiction yourself. That is fine for a domestic business and a growing headache for a global one.

Best for: online businesses and developers who want the cheapest clean card processing and control over the checkout. Skip it if: you sell software worldwide and do not want to touch VAT, in which case a merchant of record is worth the premium. Read the full Stripe review.

Whop: best for checkout, subscriptions, and payouts in one stack

Whop is a payment platform for online businesses that want more than a charge button. It runs checkout, subscription billing, and payouts from one product, with an API and CLI for teams wiring payments into their own app. Domestic US cards are 2.7% + $0.30 per successful payment, with +1.5% on international cards and +1% when currency conversion applies. Orchestration, automated billing, and tax remittance are optional add-ons when you turn them on.

It sits next to Stripe in the “take payments online” job, but the product keeps going after the charge: renewals and failed-payment retries for subscriptions, plus payouts to your team, partners, or connected sellers from the same balance. You still handle your own tax filings unless you enable Whop’s tax add-on. It is not a merchant of record in the Paddle / Lemon Squeezy sense.

Best for: SaaS, agencies, and online businesses that want checkout, subscriptions, and payouts without bolting three vendors together. Skip it if: you only need bare card acceptance and already have billing and payouts covered elsewhere. Visit Whop.

Paddle: best merchant of record for SaaS

Paddle flips the transaction: the customer buys from Paddle, and Paddle pays you. That makes it the legal seller, so it registers, files and remits sales tax and VAT everywhere you sell. One fee covers all of it: 5% + 50¢ per checkout transaction, with no monthly cost and no separate tax charge.

Yes, that is roughly two points above Stripe. What you buy with them is the entire global-tax problem removed, plus subscription billing, dunning and fraud handling. For a small SaaS team selling across borders, that is usually the better deal than assembling it yourself.

Best for: subscription software and SaaS selling internationally without a finance team. Skip it if: your volume is high and your customers are mostly domestic, where the premium buys little. Read the full Paddle review. Visit Paddle.

Lemon Squeezy: best for indie digital sellers

Lemon Squeezy is the merchant of record aimed at solo makers. It starts at the same 5% + 50¢ and adds a hosted storefront, license-key delivery and a built-in affiliate program, which is why indie developers reach for it. Watch the surcharges, though: international cards add 1.5%, PayPal adds 1.5%, and subscriptions add 0.5%, so a global recurring sale can climb toward 8.5%.

It is now owned by Stripe and being folded into Stripe's own merchant-of-record product, so factor a shifting roadmap into a long-term bet.

Best for: indie makers selling ebooks, templates, plugins or a small SaaS who want a store and license keys out of the box. Skip it if: your sales are mostly plain domestic cards, where the add-ons and store features are overkill. Read the full Lemon Squeezy review.

PayPal Business: best for buyer trust

PayPal's edge is the wallet already sitting in hundreds of millions of buyers' phones. That trust recovers sales a plain card form loses, which is why it belongs on most checkouts as a second button. The cost is real: the US online rate is 3.49% + 49¢, plus a currency-conversion spread of roughly 3% to 4% on foreign payments, and the account-hold risk that PayPal is infamous for.

Best for: a secondary option beside your main processor, or a micro-seller who needs to take money this afternoon with zero setup. Skip it as your only processor if: you do serious card volume, where Stripe or Airwallex is cheaper and settles more predictably. Never make it your sole rail, given the freezes. Airwallex: best global account for businesses

Airwallex is not a checkout button. It is a business account that holds 20+ currencies, issues corporate cards, pays suppliers abroad and accepts payments, all in one place. Its FX is the draw: 0.5% above the interbank rate on major currencies, against the 2% to 4% a bank buries in the rate. Local transfers to 120+ countries are free, and card acceptance runs 2.80% + 30¢ domestic, 4.30% + 30¢ international. The Explore tier is free to start.

Best for: cross-border businesses juggling multiple currencies, overseas suppliers or foreign revenue. Skip it if: you operate in a single currency and sell domestically, where the multi-currency machinery is dead weight and Stripe is simpler. Read the full Airwallex review. Visit Airwallex.

Wise: best for low-cost international transfers

If the job is simply moving money between currencies for as little as possible, Wise usually wins. It converts at the real mid-market rate, the same one Google shows, and charges a small transparent fee on top, commonly under half a percent and rising toward 1% on thinner routes. The multi-currency account gives you local receiving details in the major currencies, and the business version adds batch payouts.

Best for: freelancers and businesses whose main need is cheap, honest currency conversion and cross-border transfers. Skip it if: you need to accept customer card payments or issue cards to a team, which is where Airwallex or Stripe pull ahead. Read the full Wise review.

Payoneer: best for freelancers and marketplace payouts

Payoneer's strength is getting paid, especially from marketplaces and platforms like Upwork, Fiverr and Amazon that pay out directly to it. You get receiving accounts in several currencies and a global card. The pricing is less kind than Wise: around 2% on cross-border card-funded payments, currency conversion of 0.5% or more above the mid-market rate, and a $29.95 annual card fee.

Best for: freelancers and sellers who get paid by the big marketplaces and want one place to receive and spend it. Skip it if: your transfers are self-directed bank-to-bank, where Wise's tighter FX simply costs less. Read the full Payoneer review.

Revolut: best all-in-one money app

Revolut bundles a current account, multi-currency wallet, cards, budgeting and even stock and crypto into one app, with a Business tier for companies. It converts at the interbank rate up to a monthly cap set by your plan, then applies a small fair-usage fee above it. For someone who wants spending, saving and travel money in a single polished app, nothing here matches its breadth.

Best for: individuals and small businesses who want an everyday money app with strong travel FX. Skip it if: you need serious card-acceptance infrastructure or a dedicated cross-border payouts engine, where Airwallex or Stripe are built for the job. Read the full Revolut review.

How to choose

Start with the job, not the brand. If you are taking card payments online, Stripe is the default and PayPal Business is the second button that recovers wary buyers. If you sell software worldwide and dread VAT, a merchant of record earns its premium: Paddle for subscription SaaS, Lemon Squeezy for indie digital products with license keys.

If the job is moving money across borders, match the shape of your need. Wise for the cheapest transfers, Payoneer when marketplaces pay you, Revolut for an everyday money app, and Airwallex when a business needs the whole toolkit of accounts, cards, payouts and acceptance in one login. Most growing companies end up running two of these together, one to take payments and one to hold and move the money afterward. That is not indecision, it is the right setup.
